2024 Ring of Honor Inductee Dom Alessandro
DANBURY — The Danbury Hat Tricks are proud to announce the first member of this year’s Ring of Honor – Danbury resident — Dom Alessandro.
There will be three other honorees named over the upcoming weeks leading into the March 9 Ring of Honor ceremony on Alumni Night when the Hat Tricks take on the Binghamton Black Bears at the Danbury Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. with all honorees and alumni introduced on the ice after the first period.
Dom Alessandro has been one of the keys to the history of Danbury Hockey with his contribution centering around the logo design for four of the five teams to call Danbury home. Dom designed the iconic Danbury Trashers logo, followed by the Whalers, Titans, and Hat Tricks.
“It all started in 2004 with a black & white sketch of the Trashers logo that I sketched on a train and FedExed over to Jim Galante 20 years ago,” Dom said.
“I’m grateful for Dom’s efforts," Danbury Trashers Owner/Founder, Jim Galante commented. "I am extremely proud of what we put together and where the Trashers logo has traveled. He did a fantastic job.”
Dom notes another highlight was convincing the Danbury Whalers ownership group to move off their initial logo plans and switch to the "D" with the whale tail. “We had our logo for the Danbury Whalers that we were going with that we loved, but after hearing the fans feedback on what Dom had produced, it was overwhelming and we had to switch," Danbury Whalers President Alan Friedman commented. "Dom launched us and the Danbury Whalers logo is still regarded as one of the best in Minor League Hockey history. Thank you Dom, and congratulations!”
As Diamond Properties group took ownership of the Danbury Ice Arena in March of 2019, the Hat Tricks had yet to be developed. “I was excited to be included from day one on the initial ideation for the current team," Dom said. "Exploring 12 different names, settling on the ‘Hat Tricks’, and then crafting the Rabbit logo was a rewarding experience.”
“Dom is a tremendous part of the incredible hockey history in Danbury," Danbury Hat Tricks President Herm Sorcher added. "The logos he developed have been off the charts and he gave each team the foundation they needed. Well deserved, Dom.”
"As a graphic designer who loves hockey, I am humbled and honored to have my name raised alongside Danbury’s greatest players and coaches," Dom said. "Working on the team logos has allowed me to combine my love of hockey with my love of design. It’s been one of the biggest thrills of my career to see the logos being embraced and enjoyed by our Danbury hockey family. Giving fans something visual to represent their passion and emotion is at the core of what we do as graphic designers.”
Dom Alessandro lives locally in Danbury with his wife Patty and three children. He grew up in New Fairfield and studied Communication Design at Syracuse University. Dom started his career at The Schechter Group in New York City where he designed one of the original Pepsi Cool Cans in the summer of 1992. He furthered his career working for prominent branding agencies Landor and Interbrand. In 2000, he partnered with another designer, Kris Weber, to launch Alessandro/Weber Design. AW Design’s clients have included, Colgate-Palmolive, Goya Foods, Land O’ Lakes, Unilever and Coca-Cola.
On Alumni Night, the Danbury Hat Tricks will induct four members into the Danbury Hockey Ring of Honor. A banner featuring the names of the honorees will hang alongside the team banners, the previous Ring of Honor members, and Corey Fulton’s (Whalers) retired number 15.
The previous honorees include, Jim Galante (Trashers), AJ Galante (Trashers), Corey Fulton (Whalers), Dave MacIssac (Trashers, Mad Hatters, & Hat Tricks), Nick Niedert (Whalers, Titans, & Hat Tricks), Matt Caranci (Whalers & Titans), Ed Campbell (Trashers & Whalers), Steve Brown (Whalers, Titans & Hat Tricks), and Alan Friedman (Whalers).
